A client in Bentleigh East contacted us after becoming concerned that their Facebook account and primary Mac computer may have been compromised.
They had noticed that their profile picture had changed unexpectedly, along with inflammatory Facebook comments being posted to other people from their account. Understandably, they wanted to know whether someone had gained access to their Mac, Facebook profile or other important online accounts.
Because unauthorised social media activity can quickly cause personal stress and reputational damage, we were able to provide same-day computer support in Bentleigh East and attended on the day the client called.
Investigating the Client’s Mac Account
We began by checking the client’s primary Mac account for unfamiliar activity or suspicious logins.
There was no obvious evidence that another person had logged in to the Mac itself. However, a lack of visible login activity does not always rule out the possibility that a password has been exposed elsewhere.
As a precaution, we changed the Mac account password to a new secure password. This helped protect the account in case the previous password had been reused, exposed through another service or otherwise compromised.
For clients experiencing Mac login, software or security concerns, we also provide Mac repair and support services across Melbourne.
Checking Facebook Login Activity
We then reviewed the client’s Facebook account activity and login history.
This identified Facebook access from Sydney approximately two days earlier. The client confirmed they had not travelled to Sydney recently, making this a strong indication that someone else had accessed the account without permission.
The suspicious Facebook activity explained the unexpected profile picture change and inflammatory comments that had been posted from the account.
How We Secured the Facebook Account
Once the suspicious access was identified, we took immediate steps to secure the account:
- Reset the Facebook password to a new, unique password.
- Logged the account out of all active Facebook sessions and devices.
- Removed the risk of an unauthorised person remaining signed in.
- Reviewed account activity and settings for further suspicious changes.
- Checked other accounts the client was concerned may have been breached.
Signing out of all active sessions is an important step after an account compromise. Changing a password alone may not be enough if an unauthorised person still has an active session on another device.
What We Found
The available evidence pointed to unauthorised access to the client’s Facebook account, rather than a confirmed compromise of the Mac itself.
The Facebook account was reset and secured, while the client’s main Mac password was also updated as a precaution. We then reviewed other important accounts the client was concerned about to look for signs of further exposure.
This type of issue is a good reminder that a compromised social media account can sometimes be linked to reused passwords, weak account recovery settings, an exposed email account or a login session left active on another device.

What To Do If Your Facebook Account Has Been Hacked
Common warning signs include:
- Posts, comments or messages you did not send.
- A changed profile photo, name, email address or phone number.
- Login alerts from locations you have not visited.
- Friends receiving suspicious messages from your account.
- Being unexpectedly locked out of your own account.
If you notice any of these signs, act quickly. Change your password, sign out of other devices, review account recovery details and enable two-factor authentication.
It is also worth checking whether the same password has been used on your email, Apple ID, Microsoft account, banking, shopping or other important services.
