Windows 8 password reset

Use the following method to reset your windows password by altering the Ease of Use icon to open cmd.exe. Then use net user to modify password:

  1. Boot from Windows Installation CD/DVD/USB
  2. Select Repair your computer
  3. Select Advanced Options
  4. Open Command Prompt
  5. In the command prompt type
    copy c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe c:\
    copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
    
    Press Y when prompted to overwrite



  6. Reboot
  7. On the log-in screen click the Ease of Access icon (this will open cmd.exe)
  8. In the command prompt type
    net user yourusername yournewpassword
  9. Close the cmd.exe
  10. Log-in with the new password

To reverse the exe change for Ease of Access icon open cmd.exe and type

copy c:\utilman.exe c:\windows\system32\utilman.exe
